I never consciously registered the term BLACK HAT until I watched HBO's Westworld series, but, as so often happens, now that I'm aware of it I come across it everywhere. Today, it reveals that the center black square should read as "Hat" in order to complete the answers that border it, which yields YOU DID W(hat), CHEW ON T(hat), (Hat)E MONGER, and (Hat)CHET JOB. There's a more difficult version of this in which the black square is replaced by different types of hats, but in the end you can probably hack your way through with the across answers. That assumes, of course, that you're familiar with "Onetime division of the Chrysler Corporation" DESOTO, which I am not. SHRUG.

I love fun stuff like "Worst in a competition" cluing BEST. The joys of the English language. I've heard "worst" used in that way a handful of times, but probably never by a real person. I'll still enjoy it.

I was hoping that "Get dressed (up)" would be GUSSY, just because I also love that word.

I stayed asleep all the way to 5am, give or take an extended period staring at the ceiling around 1am. Fortunately, I was fed extraordinarily well last night, so jetlag hunger pains were avoided. Now I'm back to the grind again and I'M GONE

  1. A guy on the BART was doing this puzzle on his phone next to me and I plugged your blog to him. He said "My wife is the real addict," but he's the one doing the two week old puzzle.
